An experienced American base jumper who misjudged his launch has died after hitting a cliff and falling hundreds of meters into a gorge in the Swiss Alps.  The man’s identity was not disclosed citing privacy concerns.

Police in the western canton (state) of Vaud said the 44-year-old man died Friday afternoon jumping from the 2,900-meter (9,514-feet) Sex Rouge peak in the Les Diablerets range near Lake Geneva.
The American was using a so-called wing suit during the jump. Wing suits allow base jumpers to glide down rather than fall before engaging their parachute. Rescuers have so far not recovered the body because of poor weather conditions.
