An experienced American base jumper who misjudged his launch has died after hitting a cliff and falling hundreds of meters into a gorge in the Swiss Alps.  The man’s identity was not disclosed citing privacy concerns. Police in the western canton (state) of Vaud said the 44-year-old man died Friday afternoon jumping from the 2,900-meter (9,514-feet) Sex Rouge peak in the Les Diablerets range near Lake Geneva. The American was using a so-called wing suit during the jump. Wing suits allow base jumpers to glide down rather than fall before engaging their parachute. A stolen 18 inch tall bronze statue of Ed Sullivan has been recovered in good condition, but no further details have been revealed by the police on who took the $40,000 figure. Powerful typhoon Phanfone made landfall in the Tokyo metropolitan area late Sunday into early Monday after washing four American airmen in Okinawa out to sea the previous day. One crawled to safety, one died and two others were missing, presumed dead. Typhoon Phanfone came ashore near the city of Hamamatsu shortly after 8 a.m. Authorities issued evacuation advisories for more than 400,000 people in the storm's path. In Japan, bullet train service was suspended between Tokyo and Osaka because of heavy rain, and more than 600 flights were cancelled at Tokyo's Haneda Airport.
